This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.

COURSE DETAILS
Unit 1: Telling Our Stories
Students will begin the course by examining a series of poems, essays, and stories such as Marge Piercy’s “If I had been called Sabrina or Anne, she said”, George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From”, and an excerpt from Sandra Cicernos’ The House on Mango Street.
Unit 2: Language Stories
Students will continue to explore literary and poetic devices through an emphasis on close reading and annotation (e.g. using the TPCASTT model).
Unit 3: Stories that Define Us: Novel Study
Students will read a novel and will analyze the narrative structure of the novel with a particular focus on the literary style, consider themes and motifs
Unit 4: Stories of Social Change
Students will view various films/clips that exemplify the six documentary modes: expository, poetic, observational, reflexive, and performative.
